Raku - Terra Sigillata and Horsehair Singed

approximately...
height: 4.5"
diameter: 4.5"

***Do you see the abstract face impression?

This Raku piece was covered with custom blend white Terra Sigillata and singed with horse hair. Instead of glaze, horse hair is touched to the hot surface of the pottery. The singing of the coarse horse hair results in lines with a smokey trail across the piece.

Raku is the ancient ceramic Japanese firing method when a piece of pottery is pulled out of a kiln around 1850º F and placed into combustible material, like newspaper. Because of the high temperature the piece is carrying, once it is placed in the newspaper lined chamber, the paper ignites and flames ensue. The reduction firing of flame pulling the little oxygen from the chamber is what encourages the metallic glaze colors to appear. It is an amazing process to behold!

Raku with horse hair and other natural materials begins by pulling a piece of pottery out of the kiln at temperatures of 1100º or higher and individual strands of horse hair are touched to the hot surface thereby creating a mark.

************************************************
Raku pots are decorative pieces, not food-safe, and do not hold liquids. Due to the stress of going from high heat to outdoor temperature, there could be a crack on the bottom. This crack does not effect the composition or shape of the form, nor does it hinder the functionality of the piece if you choose to use it for dry materials.

Raku pots are great for planters, holding desk-top accessories, dried flowers, and, my personal favorite, holding peacock feathers!

Each piece is one-of-a-kind and you will receive the exact one in the photo.

Plants and photo props not included.

Hand thrown by me on the wheel, each shape is unique and the colors are rich and glorious!
